Belmont Mansion is the most architecturally significant elopement venue in Nashville — a 36-room Italianate villa built in 1853, sitting in the heart of Belmont University's campus. The pink stucco exterior, marble statuary, and formal gardens have made it one of the most photographed estates in the South for over a century. If you want a ceremony that feels like it's already part of history, Belmont is hard to beat.
The Setting
Belmont Mansion sits on a slight rise overlooking the original 200-acre estate that once stretched to the Cumberland River. The grounds today include a formal Italianate garden, a manicured lawn fronting the south facade, stone gazebos, original 19th-century statuary, and the iconic pink-and-cream mansion itself. Ceremonies happen on the front lawn, in the garden, or beside the gazebo — your photographer and coordinator pick the best spot based on light and the time of day.
The venue is about a 5-minute drive from Music Row, 10 minutes from downtown Nashville, and walkable from the Hillsboro Village neighborhood. That proximity to the rest of Nashville is part of the appeal — you can elope here in the morning and have a celebratory dinner at any of Nashville's top restaurants by 7 PM without driving more than 15 minutes.
History
Belmont was built in 1853 by Adelicia Acklen, one of the wealthiest women in pre-Civil War America. Her summer estate became one of the most lavish private homes in the South — imported Italian statuary, hand-painted ceilings, gilt mirrors, and one of the country's first conservatories. Adelicia survived the Civil War with her fortune largely intact (a colorful story involving 2,800 bales of smuggled cotton) and lived in the mansion until 1887.
After her death the estate became a girls' school and eventually Belmont University. The mansion itself was carefully preserved and operates today as a historic house museum and event venue. Couples who elope here aren't just renting a pretty backdrop — they're standing on grounds where some of the most important social and architectural history in Nashville unfolded.
Photo Opportunities
Belmont gives photographers more usable backdrops in a single property than almost any other Nashville venue:
- The south facade — the pink-and-cream front of the mansion is the iconic Nashville elopement photo. Best light: late afternoon, two hours before sunset.
- The formal garden — boxwood hedges, statuary, and the central gazebo. Best for golden-hour portraits.
- The water tower and grotto — original Victorian-era stonework, dramatic and unusual.
- The grand staircase (interior, available for select packages) — marble, gilt, and dramatic light from the east windows.
- The grounds' old-growth trees — Spanish-style oaks frame the lawn and add depth to wide ceremony shots.

For a 2–3 day Nashville elopement getaway, plan stops at:

- The Bluebird Cafe (15 min) — Nashville's most famous songwriter venue. Reservations are essential.
- Hillsboro Village (walking distance) — bookstores, boutique shops, and Pancake Pantry for the morning of the ceremony.
- The Parthenon at Centennial Park (10 min) — a full-scale replica of the Athenian Parthenon, free to walk around.
- Broadway (15 min) — Nashville's honky-tonk district for a low-key celebration after the ceremony.
Where to Stay
Hutton Hotel (15 min from Belmont) — boutique hotel near Music Row, favored by music industry guests. The Hermitage Hotel— Nashville's grand dame, downtown. 1 Hotel Nashville — modern, plant-filled, biophilic. For something more intimate: The 506 Lofts in 12 South is a 5-minute drive and feels like a private apartment.
Best Time to Elope at Belmont
April through early June is peak: the gardens are in bloom, light stays soft until 7:30 PM, and temperatures stay between 65–80°F. October is the second-best window, with cooler air and golden tree color on the grounds. August can be muggy; January and February ceremonies are still beautiful but shorter daylight means earlier start times.

What to Expect on Ceremony Day
Most Belmont ceremonies follow a similar rhythm:
- 2 hours before: Hair, makeup, and getting dressed wrap up at your hotel.
- 45 minutes before: Arrive at Belmont Mansion. Your coordinator and photographer are already on-site for a quick walk-through.
- 15 minutes before: Detail shots — rings, attire close-ups, and a quiet moment before guests arrive.
- Ceremony time: 15–30 minutes depending on the package — processional, vows, ring exchange, the pronouncement.
- Immediately after: Family hugs, signing the marriage license, group photos with everyone present.
- 30–90 minutes after: Portrait session at the mansion facade, in the formal gardens, and beside the gazebo.
- End of package: Photographer wraps. You head off to dinner downtown or back to your hotel.
Your edited gallery arrives in a private online gallery 2–4 weeks after the ceremony. The certified Tennessee marriage certificate arrives by mail from Davidson County 4–8 weeks later.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if it rains?
Belmont's covered porches and the formal gardens' mature trees offer partial cover for light rain — which often produces some of the most atmospheric photographs of the day. For severe weather, the venue's interior rooms can serve as a backup; your coordinator and the mansion staff confirm the plan 48 hours before based on the forecast.
Are guests of all ages welcome?
Yes. Belmont's paved paths and groomed gardens are fully accessible — well- suited for elderly grandparents, young children, and guests with mobility needs. The site is one of the most accessible historic venues in Nashville.
Can we bring our own officiant?
Yes. If you'd like a family member or friend to officiate, we deduct the included officiant from your package — just be sure they're ordained in Tennessee before your date.
Can we exceed the package guest limit?
The caps (10 guests for Getaway Plus, 20 for Friends and Family) exist because the venue, photography style, and ceremony pacing all work best at those sizes. We don't allow exceeding them, but we're happy to recommend a larger package if you want more guests.
