Cypress Gardens is one of the most visually distinctive ceremony venues in the entire country — a 175-acre bald cypress swamp where towering trees rise out of mirror-still blackwater, draped in Spanish moss, with blue paddle boats that made the place famous as the filming location for some of The Notebook's most beloved scenes. For couples who want a ceremony setting nobody else has, this is it.
The Setting
Cypress Gardens centers on a 100-acre cypress-tupelo swamp where you can paddle small flat-bottom boats between the massive bald cypress knees and trunks. The water is dark and glass-still — a tannin-stained “blackwater” that perfectly mirrors the trees above. The visual effect of ceremony photos in this setting is unlike anywhere else in the South.
Ceremonies happen on the gardens' upland paths, beside the swamp, or with the boats and water as a backdrop. The gardens themselves include azaleas, camellias, and woodland gardens, so there's plenty of color in the right seasons. The setting is unlike anything in Charleston proper — it's a 25-minute drive north, and once you arrive, it feels like a different world.
History & The Notebook
The gardens trace back to a rice plantation, with the “swamp” originally constructed in the 1700s as a reserve to flood the rice fields below. When the rice economy collapsed after the Civil War, the reserve was abandoned and slowly grew into the dramatic cypress swamp it is today — the trees, the tannin-stained water, the Spanish moss. The gardens were donated to the public in the 1960s.
Cypress Gardens became internationally famous in 2004 when The Notebookfilmed Noah and Allie's iconic boat scene here — the long sequence where they drift among the cypress trees while geese take flight. The blue rowboats featured in the film are still part of the gardens' operation, and visitors can paddle the same path Noah and Allie did. Many couples who elope here choose to include a brief paddle in their photography session.
Photo Opportunities
- The boat-and-swamp shot — the most iconic Cypress Gardens photograph, with the couple in or near a blue rowboat surrounded by towering cypresses.
- Blackwater reflection portraits — perfectly still water reflecting trees above and the couple in foreground.
- Spanish moss curtains — old draping moss creating natural soft frames.
- Walking the wooden boardwalks — couple holding hands on the elevated paths through the swamp.
- Azalea and camellia gardens — vibrant pinks and reds in late winter/early spring; perfect for color contrast against the green and brown swamp.
Best Time to Elope at Cypress Gardens
March and April are peak with azaleas, camellias, and dogwoods all blooming and temperatures in the 70s. October and Novemberbring cooler weather, fewer mosquitos, and quieter gardens. Summer ceremonies are absolutely stunning visually but can be hot, humid, and buggy — morning slots (8–10 AM) work best. Winterceremonies offer the chance of bare cypresses against pale sky and the gardens largely to yourselves; bring a jacket.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if it rains?
The gardens have covered pavilions that serve as rain backups. Light rain on the swamp produces some of the most atmospheric photographs imaginable — many couples actively hope for it. For severe weather we reschedule to another available date in your package window.
What about mosquitos and bugs?
The cypress swamp is, predictably, a humid wetland — mosquitos are real, especially April through October. The gardens treat the grounds, but we always recommend a light layer of bug spray applied 30 minutes before the ceremony. October through March generally has very few mosquitos.
Is the site accessible for elderly guests?
Yes. Cypress Gardens has paved paths and boardwalks throughout. Wheelchair access is available at all ceremony spots. Elderly grandparents and guests with mobility needs typically have no issues navigating the venue.
Can we ride in a Notebook-style rowboat?
Yes. The blue paddle boats featured in The Notebookare still part of the gardens' operation. Photography sessions often include 10–15 minutes in or beside one of them — let your coordinator know if you want this incorporated into the day.
