Hampton Park Elopement Guide

Hampton Park Elopement Guide

Hampton Park is the largest public park in downtown Charleston and one of the most beloved local elopement settings — 60 acres of mature oaks, formal gardens, a lagoon with bridges, and the kind of soft southern light that makes Charleston photography iconic. For couples who want a public-park feel with private-venue beauty, Hampton Park is the right answer.

The Setting

Hampton Park spans 60 acres adjacent to the Citadel in downtown Charleston. The park includes open lawns, a formal rose garden, mature live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, a curving lagoon crossed by stone bridges, a bandshell, and a vintage gazebo. Ceremonies happen at the gazebo, beside the lagoon, on the open lawn, or in the rose garden — your coordinator picks the spot based on time of day, season, and your photographer's preference.

The park is fully public, so casual walkers and joggers are part of the background — but the size of Hampton Park means your immediate ceremony space is essentially private. Many couples actually like the gentle ambient life of the park; it makes the photographs feel like a real moment in a real Charleston neighborhood, not a curated setting.

History

The site of Hampton Park has had a long and complicated life. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the land was part of a rice plantation. During the Civil War it became a Confederate Army prison camp; later, in the 1880s and 1890s, it hosted the South Carolina Inter-State and West Indian Exposition — Charleston's equivalent of a world's fair. The park you see today is the surviving green space from those grand exposition grounds, with the gazebo and bandshell dating back over a century.

The park was renamed Hampton Park in honor of Wade Hampton III, the former Confederate general turned Reconstruction-era South Carolina governor. The Citadel — South Carolina's military college — sits directly next to the park, and Citadel cadets are a regular sight crossing the grounds in uniform.

Photo Opportunities

  • The Spanish moss oak avenues — Hampton Park's most iconic photograph, with the couple framed beneath draped moss curtains.
  • The lagoon and bridges — water, stone bridges, willow trees; perfect for romantic portraits.
  • The rose garden — peak bloom April–May and again in September/October.
  • The gazebo — classic ceremony shots with a covered period structure.
  • The open lawn — wide-angle portraits with the park's mature trees framing the scene.

Best Time to Elope at Hampton Park

March through April for azaleas, camellias, and the first rose blooms. October to early November for soft fall light and the second wave of roses. Summer ceremonies are humid but can be beautiful in the early morning or evening (7–9 AM, 6–8 PM). WinterCharleston is mild — temperatures in the 50s and 60s — and the park's evergreen trees keep the scene lush.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if it rains?

The park's gazebo and historic bandshell provide built-in rain backups — both photograph beautifully and are designed to host gatherings of this size. For severe weather we reschedule to another available date.

Will other park visitors be around?

Yes — Hampton Park is a fully public Charleston park with regular walkers, joggers, and Citadel cadets crossing the grounds. The park is large enough that your immediate ceremony space is essentially private, and the gentle ambient life of the park makes photographs feel like real Charleston moments.

Is the park accessible for elderly guests?

Yes. Hampton Park has paved paths throughout. Suitable for guests of any age and mobility level.

Can we bring our own officiant?

Yes. We deduct the included South Carolina officiant if you bring your own — confirm they're ordained in SC before your date. South Carolina also allows self-uniting ceremonies in some configurations; your coordinator can walk through the specifics.
