Step 1: Decide what kind of Charleston ceremony you want
Charleston has two distinct elopement aesthetics, and which one you pick determines almost everything else about the day.
The downtown / urban-park ceremony
Venue: Hampton Park, the 60-acre Olmsted-designed park on the Charleston peninsula. White wooden gazebo, live-oak avenue draped in Spanish moss, formal rose garden. A 10-minute drive from the King Street historic district.
Best for: couples bringing parents or grandparents (fully wheelchair accessible, paved paths, easy parking), couples who want to walk to dinner on King Street after the ceremony, couples who want the classic Lowcountry aesthetic without off-the-beaten-path logistics. Starts at $1,275.
The swamp / Notebook ceremony
Venue: Cypress Gardens, the 170-acre cypress swamp preserve in Moncks Corner (~25 minutes from downtown). Couple and officiant exchange vows on a flat-bottom wooden boat in black water surrounded by cypress trees — the exact location used in The Notebook, The Patriot, and Cold Mountain.
Best for:couples chasing a specific cinematic look, couples who want a ceremony that doesn't look like every other wedding on Instagram, couples who don't mind a 25-minute drive from downtown. Starts at $1,575.
Step 2: Get your South Carolina marriage license
This is the only step Elopements Inc. cannot legally do for you — both partners must appear in person at the Probate Court. Here's what to know:
- Where: Charleston County Probate Court, 84 Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401. Open Monday–Friday, 8:30am–5:00pm.
- Cost: $95, paid directly to the county at the time of application (cash, check, or major credit card).
- Waiting period: 24 hours between application and ceremony. South Carolina is one of a few states that enforces this — you cannot apply the morning of and elope that afternoon. Plan to apply at least one full day before your ceremony date.
- What to bring:valid government-issued photo ID for both partners (driver's license or passport), Social Security numbers, and basic biographical information (parents' names, places of birth). No blood test required.
- Validity: the license expires if not used within 90 days. Most couples apply 2–7 days before the ceremony.
- Waiver:the 24-hour waiting period can be waived in extreme circumstances by the Probate Judge, but it's rarely granted for ordinary elopements. Don't plan around the waiver — plan around the 24-hour rule.

Step 3: Venue permits (we handle these)
Both Charleston venues require permits. The difference between “hire an Elopements Inc. package” and “DIY this yourself” is mostly this step:
- Hampton Park requires a City of Charleston special-event permit from the Charleston Parks and Recreation department. Application lead time is 30–60 days for standard ceremonies. Fee and paperwork are bundled into our package.
- Cypress Gardens requires a Berkeley County parks venue rental reservation plus a permit fee paid to the park. Lead time can be 60–90 days during peak season (April–May). Fee and paperwork are bundled into our package.
Both venues have noise restrictions (no amplified music outside specific hours), structure restrictions (no arches, archways, or temporary structures beyond ceremony chairs), and decoration restrictions (no rice, confetti, glitter, or releases of any kind). Your coordinator walks through these in your pre-ceremony planning call.
Step 4: Hire the right officiant
South Carolina requires an officiant who is either an ordained minister, a notary public who has registered specifically as a marriage officiant, a probate judge, or a similar authorized celebrant. Online ordinations (Universal Life Church, etc.) are recognized in South Carolina, but the officiant must be physically present and sign the marriage license.
Every Elopements Inc. Charleston package includes a licensed South Carolina officiant. You meet them in advance via phone or video to design the ceremony — traditional Christian service, secular ceremony, vows-only with no religious content, or a custom blend. You can also bring your own officiant if you have a family member or close friend who's ordained; our planner coordinates with them on the day.
Step 5: The day-of timeline
Here's how a typical Hampton Park elopement runs (Cypress Gardens is similar but adds 30 minutes of transit each way):
- 9:00am — Couple gets ready at their hotel. Hair and makeup if booked separately.
- 10:30am — Photographer arrives for getting-ready shots if Friends and Family package, otherwise the photographer meets you at the venue.
- 11:00am — Arrive at Hampton Park. Coordinator greets you at the gazebo, officiant introduces themselves, photographer scouts the light.
- 11:15am— Ceremony begins. 15–30 minutes depending on what's included (readings, unity rituals, vow exchange, ring exchange, pronouncement).
- 11:45am — Post-ceremony portraits in the rose garden, oak avenue, and reflection pond areas. 30–45 minutes for Getaway Plus, up to 90 minutes for Friends and Family.
- 12:30pm — Wrap. Couple walks or drives to King Street for lunch or spends the afternoon exploring the historic district.
Step 6: What to do in Charleston after the ceremony
Charleston is one of the best cities in America to extend an elopement into a 3–4 day mini-honeymoon. Recommendations from couples we've worked with:
- Lunch immediately after: 167 Raw (sushi, walking distance from Hampton Park area), Husk (modern Southern, 12 minutes from the park), Hominy Grill (classic low-country breakfast/lunch, 8 minutes from the park).
- Dinner that night: FIG, Charleston Grill, or The Ordinary — book at least 2 months out.
- Where to stay: The Restoration Hotel, The Mills House Charleston, or The Spectator. All within walking distance of King Street.
- The next day:Sullivan's Island (35 min) for beach time, Magnolia Plantation (20 min) for azaleas in spring, Charleston City Market for souvenirs, or a sunset sailing trip from the Maritime Center.
