The Complete Charleston Elopement Guide

The Complete Charleston Elopement Guide

A Charleston elopement captures one of the most distinct Southern cities in America — Spanish moss draped over centuries-old live oaks, a 175-acre blackwater cypress swamp that doubles as one of the most photographed venues on Earth, and a historic district whose 22 squares and pastel homes have been continuously inhabited since the 1670s. Charleston is consistently ranked among the world's top travel cities, and for good reason: it's the rare destination where the ceremony itself, the food, the architecture, and the weather all peak at the same time of year. This guide walks through everything you need.

Why Charleston for Your Elopement

Charleston is the South in its most concentrated form — older than Nashville, more architecturally intact than Savannah, and home to two genuinely irreplaceable elopement venues. Cypress Gardens north of the city gives you a cypress swamp that featured in The Notebook's most iconic scenes. Hampton Park in downtown Charleston gives you Spanish moss oaks, a lagoon, and a 60-acre public garden. Add one of America's top three restaurant scenes (FIG, Husk, The Grey... wait, that's Savannah — Charleston has FIG, Husk, The Ordinary), and you've got a destination that anchors a multi-day Lowcountry getaway easily.

South Carolina's marriage license rules are slightly stricter than Tennessee's — there's a 24-hour waiting period from application to ceremony. We help you sequence the timeline so the license is in hand on ceremony day. Full process in our marriage license guide.

Charleston's Two Elopement Venues

Cypress Gardens

Cypress Gardens is the most visually distinctive ceremony venue in our entire network — a 175-acre bald cypress swamp where towering trees rise from mirror-still blackwater, draped in Spanish moss, with the blue paddle boats that made the place famous as the filming location for some of The Notebook's most memorable scenes. For couples who want a ceremony nobody else has, this is it. The gardens are 25 minutes north of downtown Charleston.

Read the full Cypress Gardens elopement guide for the history, photo opportunities (including how to incorporate the blue rowboats), and day-of timeline. Packages from $1,275 to $2,775.

Hampton Park

Hampton Park is Charleston's largest public park in the historic district — 60 acres of mature live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, formal rose gardens, a lagoon crossed by stone bridges, a historic gazebo, and a bandshell. Located right next to The Citadel and walking distance from King Street, it's the urban park option for couples who want classic Charleston atmosphere with easy proximity to dinner and hotels.

Best Time to Elope in Charleston

March through May is peak Charleston elopement season — azaleas, camellias, and dogwoods blooming everywhere, comfortable 70–80°F weather, and low humidity. Late September through November is the second peak after Atlantic hurricane season tapers off, with cooler evenings and rich late-afternoon light. Summer is hot and humid (90s+) but morning ceremonies at Cypress Gardens stay cool under the cypress canopy. Winter Charleston is mild (50–65°F daytime) and the parks stay green year-round.

South Carolina Marriage License (Charleston County)

Apply at the Charleston County Probate Court. The fee is $25–$50 depending on the county service options. South Carolina requires a 24-hour waiting period — you must apply at least one full business day before your ceremony. Friday afternoon applications cannot marry on Saturday morning. Most of our Charleston couples arrive Thursday, apply Friday, and elope Saturday. The license has no expiration date once issued, useful flexibility.

Both partners must appear with government photo ID and Social Security numbers. No witnesses are required at the ceremony itself, but the officiant signs and submits the certificate. See our complete marriage license guide for the full timeline including out-of-state couples.

Charleston Elopement Cost

All-inclusive Charleston elopement packages range from $1,275 (Getaway Plus, 1-hour) to $2,775 (Friends and Family Plus, 2-hour, up to 20 guests).
